Alan grew up in Old Town, Maine, and served as Deputy Director of the Maine Bureau of Parks & Lands from 2007 to 2011. Previously he was a senior policy advisor to Governor John E. Baldacci, and was both the environmental and policy director for the Maine Department of Transportation. Alan currently serves as a Trustee of the Maine Historical Society, and as Vice President of the Northern Forest Canoe Trail. He previously served on the boards of the Maine Island Trail Association, the Friends of the Kennebec River Rail Trail, and the Maine Olmsted Alliance for Parks & Landscape.
Alan received a JD from the University of Maine School of Law, an MPA from the University of Maine, and a BA from Brown University. He attended the Maine Development Foundation's Leadership Maine program in 1998, the Institute for Civic Leadership in 1996, and leadership programs at Harvard's Kennedy School in 2001.
