Keeping an Eye on a Changing Climate

Chronolog Photo Station facing Thayer Brook Preserve's marsh

Royal River Conservation Trust has joined Momentum Conservation's Climate Change Observatory Network, an ongoing photo monitoring initiative that uses community-submitted photos to document environmental change over time. RRCT is hosting two monitoring sites: Littlejohn Island Preserve in Yarmouth and Thayer Brook Preserve in Gray.

This statewide initiative is installing Chronolog Photo Stations along shorelines, marshes, rivers, ponds, and other sensitive environments throughout Maine. The goal is to create a visual record of changing landscapes, helping communities monitor and better understand the impacts of climate change and the effectiveness of local adaptation efforts.

Anyone visiting one of these sites can participate! Simply use the station to take and submit a photo. Individual contributions are added to an ever-growing collection of images and sequenced into time-lapse videos that reveal changes that might otherwise go unnoticed.

At Thayer Brook Preserve, photographs will help document wildlife observations, seasonal changes in the marsh, and fluctuations in water levels. At Littlejohn Island Preserve, images will provide a valuable visual record of coastal erosion, king and low tides, and the effects of sea-level rise.

RRCT’s two stations join nearly two dozen other sites stretching from Portsmouth, New Hampshire, to Farmington, Maine. The project is made possible in part through support from Chronolog, whose photo-monitoring stations and time-lapse collections span the globe.

No one knows exactly what the future holds, but at least we'll have a record of how we got there!
